Chivalry is a good thing. This is a rule of etiquette. Generally this is done in formal settings and an incredibly gentlemanly thing to do. Also good for the first time meetings of wives, fiancees, and girlfriends. A good book for a lot of these rules it The Man’s Book: The Essential Guide for the Modern Man.
